Vases and bottles are waterproof, but not for food or drink. Tumblers, mugs and bowls are food safe and dishwasher safe.
Pieces that have found a home, to give a sense of the shapes and glazes I work with.
I came to ceramics by chance in 2022, at a taster session with my daughters at Margaret Gardiner's studio. Margaret taught me with great generosity. I feel grateful and fortunate to have met her. I was drawn to working on the wheel straight away.
I now work from a workshop at home in Bishop's Stortford, throwing in white stoneware. I mostly make vases and bottles, alongside pieces for everyday use. Clay is tactile by nature, and the pieces I find most evocative bring together how something looks and how it feels to hold and use.
Much of my attention goes into form: the proportions of a shape, and how it changes the space around it and our relationship to that space. Throwing moves away from straight lines, and my work tends to avoid straight profiles too.
Decoration is quicker and more instinctive. I use texture, sgraffito and loose brush strokes to bring out how a shape feels to me, and I enjoy the contrast between the focus that goes into making a form and the more immediate, abstract marks I leave on it.
Glaze is the final part of each piece. I develop and test my own glazes, and I'm interested in how a glaze interacts with the shape, the clay body and the conditions in the kiln, and how it can enhance and complete the form (or not!).
Each piece is unique, though I enjoy repetition throwing (so you may see small series of similar shapes).
Every piece carries this mark on its base.
